For over two years, the Apple iPhone has dominated the mobile phone industry with its custom operating system, thousands of applications and strong social presence. The iPhone has yet to be knocked off the charts where it still remains as an undisputed king.
Though one would think that after a couple of years, that high throne might be getting pretty shaky by now –Apple already has a successor waiting on the wings, January and early February saw a quick rise in news regarding the upcoming Apple iPhone 4G. Apple certainly has big plans, and it would not be surprising that their lawsuit against HTC is not part of that plan.
Of course, it is still up to the courts and the International Trade Commission to determine whether HTC is actually guilty of infringing over 20 software and hardware patents. But with Apple now specifically pointing out the Google-branded and HTC-made Nexus One, it is pretty obvious that Apple intends to strike deep into the heart of the Android core.
Without a doubt, Android smart phones have been growing since they entered the scene with the HTC Dream. Now, the Google mobile platform is considered to be the most sought after operating system (and Windows Phone 7 series too, but that is a different story) for mobile devices. Despite having the iPhone 4G waiting on the wings, having to compete with potential super phones such as the Motorola Shadow and HTC Scorpion will certain hurt the new iPhone’s entry to scene.
Apple has now tagged HTC and indirectly, Google as its true competitors. Despite the weak sales of the Nexus One, Apple is considering the potential threat and has taken some pretty careful steps against their competitors.
